About this position

Two PhD positions are available at the University of Texas at Arlington in Resource and Energy Engineering, starting Spring 2027. The positions are supervised by Prof. Mohamed Malki and focus on subsurface energy, computational modeling, geophysics, and machine learning, with applications to geologic hydrogen and enhanced geothermal systems.

Position 1: Numerical Simulation and Reactive Transport involves computational modeling of subsurface fluid flow, transport, and reactions, with applications to hydrogen generation, migration, and recovery. Preferred backgrounds include petroleum, chemical, or geological engineering, along with Python or MATLAB, reservoir engineering, porous-media flow, numerical modeling, and familiarity with ML and simulation software.

Position 2: Geophysical Forward and Inverse Modeling focuses on computational geophysics for imaging and monitoring subsurface energy systems. Preferred preparation includes geophysics, geology, petroleum engineering, or applied math, plus seismic methods, wave propagation, signal processing, Python or MATLAB, and experience with FWI or Bayesian inversion.

The group offers a multidisciplinary environment with opportunities to publish, present at conferences, and collaborate with academic, national-lab, and industry partners. Applicants should email the requested materials to mohamed.malki2@uta.edu.

Application materials: CV, unofficial transcripts, research statement, 2-3 references, and publications/coding portfolio.
