About this position

Research Center Borstel – Leibniz Lung Center is offering a Bioinformatics PhD candidate (m/f/d) position within the Leibniz ScienceCampus Antimicrobial Resistance Plasticity (AMR-PLAS). The project focuses on how microorganisms evolve in response to antibiotics, with particular attention to antimicrobial resistance, genomic and non-genomic mechanisms of bacterial plasticity, and the analysis of clinically relevant pathogens such as ESKAPE pathogens and mycobacteria.

This PhD project is embedded in a regional interdisciplinary network linking the Research Center Borstel with the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel and other participating groups. The environment combines experimental, molecular, genomic, and theoretical approaches, giving the successful candidate the opportunity to work in a structured research and training setting with seven PhD candidates across the network. The post includes close collaboration with a junior scientist, methodological support, and ongoing scientific exchange.

The position is offered for 3 years and is paid at 65% TVöD-VKA, with the usual public-sector benefits. The workplace is at a top-class research center near Hamburg, with family-friendly conditions, flexible working hours, childcare support, and workplace health promotion.

Applicants should have an MSc degree or equivalent in bioinformatics, computer science, data science, statistics, or a related field with a molecular biology focus. The ideal candidate will have strong quantitative and analytical skills, an interest in microbial genomics and host-pathogen biology, basic experience with NGS data analysis, proficiency in Python and/or R, and routine use of Linux. Experience with HPC and workflow systems such as Snakemake or Nextflow is an advantage. Good English skills and the ability to work independently in a collaborative, interdisciplinary setting are expected.
