About this position
Doctoral Candidate (m/f/d) in Tree Growth and Wood Physiology at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), School of Life Sciences, Freising, Germany.
This ERC-funded STEMCELL WP2 project investigates the mechanistic link between water availability, carbon supply, and wood formation in mature trees under drought conditions. The doctoral researcher will work on tree growth, wood physiology, ecophysiology, plant biology, ecohydrology, and mechanistic modeling, with a strong focus on cambial activity, cell enlargement, wall thickening, hydraulic traits, carbohydrate pools, and hormonal regulation.
The position is 75% (30 hours/week) in TV-L E13 for 3 years, with a possible extension of up to 6 months. The work will involve controlled experiments on mature temperate European trees at whole-ecosystem rainfall-exclusion sites, including the KROOF experimental site and partially the Swiss Canopy Crane II site. Methods include stem chilling, controlled drought, dendrometers, xylogenesis, and high-resolution monitoring of wood formation and water status.
Applicants should have completed a master’s degree in ecophysiology, plant biology, forest growth sciences, ecohydrology, or a related field. Strong quantitative skills, coding, statistical analysis, and data management are expected, along with good communication and teamwork skills. A category B driving license is desirable.
