About this position

PhD Studentship: Wireless Communication, Signal Processing, and AI at The University of Manchester, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

This is a fully funded PhD focused on wireless communication, signal processing, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. The project explores AI-native and sensing-aware wireless systems where communications and sensing are co-designed end-to-end. Research directions include network-level design and multi-node cooperation, wireless resource allocation and scheduling under multi-objective KPIs, reconfigurable/programmable radio environments, and theory with guarantees using convex/non-convex optimisation and performance analysis.

The work spans theory to lightweight on-hardware prototypes, with publications targeted at leading IEEE venues in communications and signal processing, as well as relevant AI venues. This makes it a strong fit for applicants interested in advanced wireless systems, optimisation, distributed/federated learning, and prototype-driven research.

Eligibility: applicants should have, or expect to achieve, at least a master’s (or international equivalent) in a relevant science or engineering-related discipline. Strong programming ability in optimisation or machine learning is expected, with Python/Matlab/C++ and PyTorch/TensorFlow specifically mentioned. Experience in signal processing, wireless communications, SDR, or GPU prototyping is a plus. Research potential and publications in top-tier journals or conferences are highly desirable.

Funding: the studentship is fully funded for 3.5 years. Eligible candidates who can pay tuition fees at the Home rate may apply. The award includes an annual tax-free stipend at the UKRI rate (£21,805 for 2026/27), tuition fee coverage, and an expected yearly increase in stipend.
