About this position

PhD opportunity: Hybrid Visualization for Scientific Data at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), School of Advanced Technology, in Suzhou, China.

This funded doctoral project focuses on computer science, data visualization, human-computer interaction, data science, and immersive technologies such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR). The research will investigate hybrid visualization methods for scientific data, including how users can move between overview and detail, abstraction and spatial representation, and different interaction modes across physical, augmented, and virtual spaces.

The project involves designing and developing interactive visualization prototypes, creating novel visual representations and interaction techniques, and running empirical user studies to evaluate effectiveness. Expected outcomes include design principles, interaction methods, and prototype systems for hybrid scientific visualization, contributing to immersive analytics and scientific analysis.

Supervision: Principal supervisor Dr. Lingyun Yu, with co-supervisors Dr. Yue Li and Dr. Baoru Huang.

Funding: Three-year funded PhD studentship. Tuition fees are covered for three years, and the award includes up to RMB 16,500 for international conference participation. The majority of research will be conducted at XJTLU in Suzhou, China, with a possible short-term research visit to the University of Liverpool if required.
