About this position
Amsterdam UMC is offering a funded PhD position within an MSCA Doctoral Network project on functional micronutrient status in critically ill patients. The project sits at the intersection of critical care, clinical nutrition, biochemistry, molecular biology, and laboratory medicine, with collaboration between Amsterdam UMC and the Reinier Haga Medical Diagnostic Center.
The research fellowship focuses on improving diagnostics for micronutrient deficiencies in ICU and other severely ill patient groups. The PhD candidate will coordinate a multicentre prospective observational study involving healthy volunteers, elective cardiac surgery patients, critically ill patients, and burn patients. The work includes serial blood sampling, laboratory analyses in serum, leukocytes, and erythrocytes, biomarker assessment, and development of algorithms for subphenotype identification using latent profile analysis.
This position is part of the BIO-MICRO consortium and includes intersectoral secondments in Appingedam and Delft. The successful candidate will also contribute to translational work on commercialising micronutrient assays in erythrocytes and leukocytes. The training environment is strong and interdisciplinary, with structured doctoral training, monthly online sessions, in-person workshops, scientific writing support, and opportunities for international conferences.
Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a Master’s degree in Biochemistry, Nutrition, Molecular Biology, or equivalent; have excellent English; and possess adequate statistics/data analysis skills. Dutch is an advantage. MSCA mobility rules apply: candidates must not have lived or worked in the Netherlands for more than 12 months in the three years before recruitment, and they must not already hold a doctoral degree.
Funding: the position is fully funded for 48 months under MSCA, with a living allowance of €4010/month (country correction factor applies), a mobility allowance of €710/month, and a family allowance of €660/month if applicable.
