About this position

IRTA is recruiting a PhD candidate for the Sustainable Field Crops / Sustainable Extensive Crops team at Mas Badia, based in La Tallada d’Empordà (Girona), Spain. The project focuses on agroecological practices for better arable crop production and soil health, combining field experiments, data analysis, and crop-soil modelling to assess agronomic, environmental, and socio-economic impacts.

The successful candidate will work on literature review, data collection and management, data analysis and visualization, field sampling and measurements (plants, soil, gas emissions, and other environmental variables), and the use and adjustment of soil-crop simulation models. The role also includes dissemination at conferences and writing scientific papers and technical articles.

Eligibility highlights: degree in Agronomy, Biology, Environmental Science, Soil Science or related fields; a relevant master's degree; eligibility for doctoral admission under Catalan university rules (60–120 ECTS at official master's level or equivalent); no previous PhD; and good English. Desirable skills include fieldwork experience, statistics, R/Python, AI tools, crop/soil modelling, and strong communication. Catalan and Spanish are valued, and a driving licence is preferred.

Funding: 4-year contract with a gross salary of 23,322.09 EUR/year for the first three years and 26,325.47 EUR/year in the fourth year. The doctoral grant also provides up to 7,000 EUR extra for research stays and covers tuition fees for the PhD programme.

Application: send your CV and motivation letter. The deadline is 31 August 2026. Selected candidates must show proof of doctoral admission or enrolment at contract signing.
