About this position

PhD opportunity at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in the Electronic Instrumentation group, Department of Microelectronics, focused on broadband semiconductor photodetectors for spectropolarimetric imaging. The project is part of the INTERPRETER initiative, which aims to develop compact spectropolarimetric cameras for space-based Earth observation.

You will work on a CMOS-compatible photodetector platform spanning the visible and short-wave infrared (SWIR) range. The research includes translating system requirements into detector specifications, designing and modelling device structures, developing fabrication and integration routes, fabricating experimental devices, and characterising spectral responsivity, quantum efficiency, dark current, noise, linearity, uniformity, and stability.

The project also involves integration with photonic-crystal filters, including alignment tolerances, optical crosstalk, electrical crosstalk, and calibration requirements. The final goal is to demonstrate and benchmark a detector or detector array suitable for compact spectropolarimetric cameras.

Supervision is by Prof. Kofi Makinwa and Dr. Padmakumar R. Rao, with collaboration across TU Delft, SRON, and other INTERPRETER partners.

Eligibility highlights: Master’s degree in electrical engineering, microelectronics, applied physics, photonics, materials science, nanotechnology, or a related field; strong semiconductor device physics background; experience in cleanroom fabrication, device modelling/TCAD, electrical or optical detector characterisation; and proficiency in English.

Funding and conditions: 4-year doctoral employment in principle, salary €3204–€4051 gross per month (full-time), plus holiday allowance and end-of-year bonus. TU Delft also offers Graduate School training, health insurance discounts, work-cost contribution, flexible schedules, and relocation support.
