About this position

PhD opportunity in Empirical and Applied Linguistics at the University of Münster in Germany. The Graduate School offers an interdisciplinary doctoral programme with a strong focus on linguistics and related areas, including general linguistics, second language acquisition, applied linguistics, German linguistics, English philology, Romance linguistics (French, Italian, Spanish), Dutch philology, Scandinavian studies, Slavic studies, and psycholinguistics.

Doctoral researchers can pursue a dissertation on any linguistic topic, with either a more theoretical or practical orientation, as long as the project has a solid empirical basis. The programme emphasizes methods of linguistic data collection and analysis, individual supervision by two faculty members, and a written supervision agreement before enrolment.

Training includes regular colloquia/workshops, a proposal defence, a mid-term review, and a thesis defence, plus tailored coursework and research training. Students are encouraged to present at conferences and complete a 3–6 month research stay abroad if they have not already done so.

Eligibility: a Master's degree (or equivalent) in a linguistics-related subject with at least a good grade; related disciplines such as speech or language therapy may also be considered. German and English language skills are recommended, but no minimum level is specified.

Funding and costs: no tuition fees, but a semester contribution of about 355 EUR is required. The Graduate School does not offer full scholarships for the entire doctorate, though some support may be available for conferences and stays abroad.

Application: applicants from all countries can apply for the summer semester until 30 November and for the winter semester until 31 May. Apply via e-mail and consult the DAAD programme page for details.
