About this position

Doctoral student in Foundations of Cryptography at Chalmers University of Technology in the Crypto Team and Security Group, with Christoph Egger as main supervisor.

The project sits in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and the division of Computing Science, with research interests in foundations of cryptography, formal methods, cryptographic protocols, complexity theory, probability theory, and the mathematical analysis of algorithms. Possible topics include fine-grained and bounded-space cryptography, realization of idealized models, relationships between cryptographic notions, and intersections between cryptographic protocols and formal methods.

This is a fully funded PhD position from the start. The appointment is for four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20% of working time, extending the position to five years. The starting salary is 35,725 SEK per month (from May 1, 2026). Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the study period.

Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field is required; for applicants educated outside Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted. Strong English communication skills are mandatory, and applicants should be comfortable reading and writing proofs and formal definitions. Experience in cryptography, probability theory, complexity theory, and formal methods is an advantage.

How to apply: submit the application in English via the online application form on the vacancy page. Upload a CV, personal letter, brief introduction, motivation for the position, explanation of your intended PhD focus and prior experience, and your bachelor’s and, if available, master’s thesis together with transcripts. Applications sent by email or incomplete applications will not be considered.

Deadline: August 14, 2026.
