About this position

PhD Opportunity at KU Leuven, Belgium

KU Leuven is inviting applications for a fully funded PhD position in Innovative Optical Sensing for Precision Storage of Fruit at the Division of Mechatronics, Biostatistics and Sensors (MeBioS), Department of Biosystems. This interdisciplinary project focuses on improving postharvest storage of apples and pears by combining optical sensing, plant physiology, imaging, and data-driven modeling.

The research aims to develop non-destructive sensing technologies that can predict fruit storage performance by linking fruit microstructure, gas exchange, and physiology. The project also emphasizes translating laboratory methods into portable sensor solutions for sustainable agriculture and food storage.

Key research areas include spatially resolved spectroscopy (SRS), optical sensing and imaging, X-ray micro-computed tomography (µCT), postharvest physiology and fruit quality, precision agriculture, smart food storage, predictive modeling, and portable sensor development.

Eligibility: Applicants should have a Master's degree in Bioscience Engineering, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Applied Biology, or a related field. Experience or strong interest in spectroscopy, plant physiology, imaging, data analysis, or mathematical modeling is desirable. Strong analytical and communication skills are important.

Institution: KU Leuven, Leuven, Belgium.

Deadline: 15 August 2026.

Interested candidates should apply through the official KU Leuven vacancy page and ensure their application is submitted before the deadline.
