About this position
Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) in Berlin, Germany is advertising a PhD student (m/f/d) position in mathematics, scientific computing, physics, or a closely related engineering discipline with a strong focus on numerical methods.
The project is part of a DFG collaborative project on assessing the reliability of non-destructive testing and structural health monitoring methods using ultrasound. The PhD work focuses on developing and validating a hybrid simulation-experiment approach, with emphasis on simulation methods based on the Scaled Boundary Finite Element Method (SBFEM) for modelling guided ultrasonic wave propagation in pipelines. The role also includes extending existing SBFEM implementations to coupled-field / multiphysics problems.
Applicants should hold a completed Master’s or Diplom degree in mathematics, applied mathematics, scientific computing, physics, or an engineering field with strong numerical-methods training. Required skills include expertise in numerical modelling of wave propagation and structural dynamics, and good programming ability in at least one scientific language such as Python, Matlab, or C++. Experience with Git is desirable. Helpful background includes wave propagation in solids, guided ultrasonic waves, acoustics, non-destructive testing, and prior exposure to SBFEM or related methods.
The position is full-time (100%), offered on a temporary 36-month contract, and paid according to E 13 TVöD. Part-time work is possible. BAM also highlights access to modern research infrastructure, high-performance computing, interdisciplinary training, and support from the BAM Graduate Academy.
Deadline: 2026-08-23. Apply online via the linked application portal, or submit by post to BAM’s HR department and quote Job-ID J000000183.
