About this position

PhD opening in micro-optics for coronagraphs and exoplanet research at Uppsala University, Sweden. The position is in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Division of Applied Materials Science, within the Diamond Optics group. The project focuses on designing and manufacturing next-generation coronagraphs for space telescopes and large ground-based telescopes to enable direct observations of Earth-like exoplanets.

The research combines physics, materials science, astronomy/astrophysics, optics, micro- and nanofabrication, optical simulations, and instrument design. Typical work includes programming for optical simulations and optimization, nanofabrication in diamond and other optical materials, characterization with SEM and profilometry, and optical bench test setups.

The doctoral project is part of the Swedish Space Research School (SSRS), which offers coordinated doctoral education, courses, workshops, and conferences. The position is a full-time doctoral employment for four years, with salary according to the local collective agreement for PhD students.

Eligibility highlights: a master’s degree in engineering physics, physics, materials science, micro- and nanosystem technology, or equivalent; general doctoral entry requirements; and good oral and written English. Helpful experience includes astronomy, optics, cleanroom fabrication, programming, metrology, microsystems integration, and optical characterization.

Application deadline: 14 August 2026. Applicants should submit a cover letter, CV, certified degree and grades, thesis and supporting documents, and contact details for at least two referees through Uppsala University’s recruitment system.
