About this position

This funded PhD project sits at the intersection of environmental science, ecology, microbiology, genomics, bioinformatics, and environmental data science. The project will use cutting-edge microbial metagenomics to study how freshwater ecosystem function varies across New Zealand lakes, drawing on a nationally unique dataset of metagenomic sequences from more than 150 lakes across Aotearoa New Zealand.

The successful candidate will integrate genomic data with environmental and limnological datasets to understand how multiple stressors such as nutrient enrichment, land-use change, climate warming, invasive species, and hydrological modification influence freshwater ecosystem function. Research tasks include characterising spatial patterns in microbial functional genes, examining relationships between microbial functions and environmental drivers, and analysing how interacting stressors shape microbial functional potential across local and national scales.

Depending on the student’s interests and experience, there may also be opportunities for field sampling and laboratory experiments to validate genomic findings and investigate specific ecological processes.

Applicants should have a strong background in environmental science, ecology, microbiology, molecular biology, or a related discipline. Interest in microbial ecology, genomics, and environmental data science is important, and experience with R or similar software is desirable. Good communication skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively are expected. Applicants must meet Lincoln University PhD entry requirements.

Funding includes NZ$35,000 per annum tax free plus full domestic or international tuition fees. Applications are reviewed as they are received, and the position may be filled before the closing date.
