About this position

PhD opportunity at University College Dublin in the School of Chemical & Bioprocess Engineering with Dr Jessica Whelan.

This funded project focuses on the model-supported design of scalable, cost-effective tangential flow filtration (TFF) for the purification of viral vectors, especially AAV used in in vivo gene therapy. The research aims to develop a robust framework for clarifying and concentrating post-production reactor lysate before chromatography, improving downstream yield, process sustainability, and manufacturing economics.

Key research themes include chemical engineering, bioprocess engineering, biotechnology, systems engineering, membrane fouling, product recovery and stability, and optimization of complex process parameters. The project is designed to support large-scale commercial manufacturing of viral vectors.

Funding includes a stipend of €25,000 per year plus fees for 4 years. The opportunity is open to qualified applicants of any nationality.

Eligibility highlights: a relevant scientific or engineering degree is required (for example chemical/biochemical engineering or biotechnology), along with a strong academic record, motivation, curiosity, enthusiasm, and the ability to work independently and in a team.

To apply, complete the application form and the Rinn Centre Expression of Interest form by 15 August 2026. The EoI must be completed in a single session.
