About this position

PhD opportunity at Monash University Malaysia in Subang Jaya, Malaysia on the role of PBMC in disorders of gut–brain interaction (DGBI), including IBS, and the functional evaluation of an in-vitro gut–immune co-culture model.

The project investigates how patient-derived peripheral blood mononuclear cells and macrophages may contribute to gut inflammation, altered cytokine signalling, and epithelial barrier disruption. The research aims to isolate macrophages from PBMCs of DGBI patients, test their ability to induce intestinal inflammation in epithelial cell models, and evaluate therapeutic interventions such as anti-inflammatory drugs, probiotics, postbiotics, and nutraceutical compounds.

This project is especially relevant to students interested in immunology, cell biology, microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, and translational gastrointestinal disease research. The post is supervised by Dr Wei Meng Lim with Dr Pang Kok Lun as associate supervisor.

Funding is available through the Graduate Research Excellence Scholarship (GRES), which includes a full tuition fee waiver and a monthly stipend for up to 3 years 6 months. Eligibility requires at least First Class Honours (H1) or equivalent recognised by Monash University Malaysia, plus the required English language standard.

To apply, first contact the main supervisor with your academic background and achievements to confirm fit. Then submit your application using the advertised topic title and follow the application submission guide and scholarship/course instructions on the university website.
