This funded PhD project focuses on growth stresses in plantation-grown eucalypts, with a particular emphasis on Eucalyptus fastigata. The project aims to understand why growth strain limits the use of plantation eucalypts for higher-value solid wood products and how these stresses might be mitigated.
Research topics include wood science, forestry, plant biology, genetics, materials science, and chemistry. Applied work will involve screening a New Zealand E. fastigata seed orchard for low growth stresses, studying age-age correlations, and exploring genetic control of growth stresses. Fundamental work will probe the physical principles behind the stresses and examine cell wall and sap chemistry.
The project is supervised by Dr Clemens Altaner (Associate Professor for Wood Science). Applicants should have a GPA of 7.0 (A-) or higher and either a four-year bachelor degree with first class honours or a Master’s degree in wood science & technology, biomaterials, forestry, or a related field. A valid driver’s licence is required, and the successful candidate must be willing to do both field and lab work.
Funding is provided as a 3-year PhD scholarship covering full university fees plus a stipend of NZ$33,000 per year. Applications are reviewed immediately and accepted until the position is filled.
