About this position
PhD position in Diagnostics of Infection and Antimicrobial Resistance at the University of Inland Norway, Department of Biotechnology, Faculty of Applied Ecology, Agricultural Sciences and Biotechnology (ALB).
The project sits at the intersection of biotechnology, microbiology, infection diagnostics, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), metagenomics, bioinformatics, machine learning, and clinical sample analysis. The research aims to develop a proof-of-concept decision-making diagnostic system for rapid, accurate, on-site detection of infections, pathogen identification, resistance profiling, and prediction of antibiotic susceptibility. Planned work includes optimizing a culture-independent sample preparation method for body fluids, performing metagenomic and potentially photonics analyses on clinical samples, and correlating generated data for a clinical proof-of-concept study.
The position is a three-year PhD and the candidate must work from the designated workplace in Hamar, Norway. The role is embedded in a multidisciplinary environment with expertise in genomics, molecular biology, clinical microbiology, microscopy, spectroscopy, machine learning, biostatistics, and bioinformatics, and includes collaboration with Norwegian and Indian partners as well as WHO-related collaborators.
Eligibility highlights: applicants must qualify for admission to the PhD programme in Applied Ecology and Biotechnology, normally hold a relevant master's degree (or equivalent), and have a strong academic record. Required experience includes nucleic acid extraction or host cell/DNA depletion, Oxford Nanopore/MinION sequencing, full sequencing workflows, clinical sample handling, and large-scale biological data analysis. English proficiency is required; approved tests include TOEFL, IELTS, CAE, or CPE for non-English-speaking applicants.
