The XplaiNLP group in the Business Informatics program of Faculty 03 (Law and Economics) is seeking a motivated academic staff member for a 4-year PhD position in Explainable AI. The role is based in Mainz, Germany, is paid at EG 13 TV-L, and starts immediately.
The successful candidate will conduct independent research on interpretable/explainable machine learning with the goal of earning a doctorate. Research tasks include designing, implementing, and evaluating XAI approaches and publishing results in international conferences and academic journals. The position also includes teaching support in machine learning/XAI and supervision assistance for bachelor’s and master’s theses.
Applicants should have an excellent completed Master’s degree or equivalent, preferably in Computer Science or a closely related field, ideally with a focus on Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, or Explainable AI. Strong knowledge of explainability methods such as interpretable ML, post-hoc explainability, concept-based explanations, and causal inference is expected. Very good programming skills, especially in Python, and experience with ML frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow are required. Very good English (C1) and sufficient German for teaching (B1 desirable) are also requested.
