About this position

PhD opportunity at Maastricht University in multimodal molecular imaging and multi-omics for biopharma. This fully funded doctoral project is hosted by the Maastricht MultiModal Molecular Imaging Institute (M4i), Maastricht University, in collaboration with the Institut Servier de Médecine Translationnelle in Saclay, France. The research focuses on antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), targeted cancer therapies, and the development of next-generation imaging workflows to study biodistribution, efficacy, and safety.

The PhD candidate will work at the intersection of molecular imaging, mass spectrometry imaging, multi-omics, digital pathology, artificial intelligence, and translational biomedical research. Methods mentioned include MALDI-MSI, DESI-MSI, transmission-mode MALDI-MSI, nanoscale SIMS, laser microdissection, and high-resolution mass spectrometry. The project aims to visualize and quantify total ADC, total antibody, and free payload across multiple biological scales, from whole organisms and organs to tissues, cells, and subcellular structures.

The successful candidate will join an international multidisciplinary team of imaging scientists, analytical chemists, biologists, clinicians, computational scientists, and biomedical researchers. A significant part of the project will be spent at Servier research facilities in Saclay, France, offering experience in both academia and industry. The work is especially relevant to oncology drug development, pharmacodynamics, efficacy biomarkers, and toxicity mechanisms.

Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree in (Bio)Chemistry, Analytical Science and Technology, Biomedical Sciences, or a related field; hands-on laboratory experience with biological systems; strong interest in molecular imaging and analytical chemistry; affinity with spatial biology or multi-omics; interest in computational image analysis and AI; excellent English (C1 or higher). Experience with relevant imaging or data science tools is beneficial but not required.

Funding: fully funded PhD position with a 12-month contract and the prospect of a 3-year extension. Salary is €3059.00–€3881.00 gross per month (full-time), plus holiday allowance and year-end bonus.
