About this position

PhD Position in Ruminant Nutrition and Sustainable Dairy Production at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in Uppsala, Sweden.

This doctoral project is centered on animal science, ruminant nutrition, dairy production, and sustainable livestock systems. The research will investigate nutritional strategies to improve nitrogen use efficiency in dairy cows, with a focus on forage-based feeds, feed protein content and degradability, nitrogen utilization, feed intake, and milk yield. The work includes feeding trials with dairy cows, sampling and analysis of feed, milk, and other biological materials, and statistical analysis of experimental data.

The successful PhD student will participate in all stages of the research process, including planning experiments, conducting trials, processing data, publishing results, and presenting at conferences. The position also includes doctoral courses and departmental activities. The department works broadly with animal husbandry, animal welfare, feed and nutrition, management and environment, ethology, animal ethics, and sustainable food production.

Eligibility: a Master's degree in Animal Science, Veterinary Medicine, Biology, or a related field; English proficiency equivalent to Swedish upper secondary school English B/English 6; excellent written and spoken English; and a valid Category B driving licence. Preferred experience includes working with cattle, data collection and management from animal feeding trials, and wet chemistry methods for feed analysis.

Funding: full-time doctoral studentship for four years, with salary according to the local collective agreement for doctoral students and fixed salary progression levels.

Deadline: 2026-08-10. The position starts by agreement, no later than 15 October 2026.
