About this position

NHH Norwegian School of Economics is advertising PhD Research Scholar positions in Finance at the Department of Finance in Bergen, Norway.

The opening is for candidates interested in finance research, including corporate finance, asset pricing, and market microstructure. The department describes a strong research environment with seminars, brown bags, and close supervision by faculty members. PhD research scholars are expected to work closely with thesis advisors, present research internally, and participate in workshops and seminars.

This is a four-year fully funded PhD programme. The position includes an annual salary of NOK 570,000 from August 2027, with possible higher pay for especially qualified applicants, plus Norwegian taxes and benefits, public health care, pension savings, and research funding for travel, conferences, and research stays abroad. The role also includes 25% career-promoting work such as teaching assistance and pedagogical training.

Eligibility highlights: applicants normally need a five-year MSc in Economics and Business Administration or a comparable degree, with an average grade of at least B (4.0) in the Norwegian system. Applicants must also show adequate academic skills and English proficiency unless exempt. GMAT or GRE is required for academic skills unless waived; TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE Academic is required for English unless exempt.

Waivers: GMAT/GRE is waived for applicants with a qualifying master’s degree from a Nordic institution. English test requirements are waived for native English speakers, applicants with a qualifying Nordic master’s degree, or applicants whose master’s degree was taught in English.

Application deadline: 15 September 2026. Applicants must apply through Jobbnorge and upload degree certificates, transcripts, statement of purpose, research proposal, CV, and publication list as separate files. Recommendation letters are optional and may be sent directly to the department by email.

The position is based at NHH in Bergen, and the school notes that female applicants will be given preference if candidates are otherwise equally qualified.
