About this position

PhD opportunity at the Energy Materials Laboratory, Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia, within the LACISE project.

The project focuses on battery protective coatings and operando characterisation of layered transition-metal-oxide cathodes. The research aims to develop inert coatings for layered Li-ion and P2-type Na-ion cathodes, tune coating thickness and composition, and understand how structural degradation, interfacial changes, and gas evolution occur during battery operation.

You will work with advanced experimental methods including operando XRD, synchrotron XAS, SEM/TEM, XPS, ICP, Raman spectroscopy, and post-mortem analysis. The position also includes collaboration with Swiss PSI partners and the wider LACISE consortium, with opportunities to publish in high-impact journals and present at international conferences.

The laboratory is described as the largest battery materials research group in Latvia and is focused on next-generation cobalt-free cathode materials for lithium- and sodium-ion batteries, supporting safer and longer-lasting energy storage for grid-scale renewable energy systems.

Eligibility highlights include a master’s degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics, Chemical Engineering, or a related field, plus eligibility to enrol in a doctoral programme at the University of Latvia. Strong written and spoken English is required, and experience in electrochemistry, functional materials, in-situ or operando characterisation, or synchrotron-based techniques is considered advantageous.

Funding includes a salary of €1,600–€2,000 gross per month, travel support for conferences and synchrotron visits, health insurance, and full social benefits. The post is full-time and fixed-term until May 2029, with the possibility of extension.
