About this position

The European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, France is offering a PhD project on Sub Nanosecond Imaging of Operating Microelectronic Devices by X-ray Diffraction Microscopy. This project is hosted at beamline ID01, a world-leading instrument for micro- and nano-beam X-ray diffraction imaging and time-resolved full-field diffraction microscopy.

The research focuses on semiconductor devices based on SiGe(Sn) heterostructures and tackles key issues that limit efficiency and lifetime, especially heat generation and strain-induced degradation during operation. The successful candidate will work with the ID01 team and collaborate with European semiconductor device research groups and technology organizations. The project aims to probe the spatial and temporal distribution of lattice strain under realistic operating conditions and to advance X-ray diffraction microscopy toward 3D spatial and temporal strain-temperature imaging for next-generation electronic and optoelectronic devices.

ESRF is an international research centre supported by 19 countries and known for its high-impact science across physics, materials science, biology, medicine, environmental sciences, and cultural heritage. The successful applicant will join a highly international environment with access to leading-edge synchrotron infrastructure and a network of collaborators working on applied materials and devices in the time domain.

Eligibility and requirements: applicants should hold a degree that allows enrolment for a PhD, such as an MSc, Master 2 de Recherche, Laurea or equivalent, in chemistry, materials science, physics, or a closely related field. The candidate must provide proof of the completed diploma at application stage, and also satisfy doctoral enrolment requirements for the doctoral school at Department of Sciences, Rome Tre University, Roma, Italy. English proficiency at B2 level must be documented unless exempt through nationality or an English-taught degree. Applicants must also comply with the Marie Skłodowska-Curie mobility rule.

Preferred profile: a background in X-ray diffraction or electronics is desirable, and programming skills in Python are an advantage. The position also values teamwork, clear communication, and prioritisation in a synchrotron research setting.

Funding: the post includes a competitive compensation and allowances package, plus financial support for relocation to Grenoble.
