Post-doctoral Assistant in Biology (30189) Ghent University in Belgium

Ghent University is advertising a postdoctoral position in the Department of Biology (Faculty of Sciences) focused on climate-driven stress responses at the base of the marine food web. The project uses an experimental approach with trophic markers and is centered on research in marine ecology, with strong links to ecological biostatistics, experimental design, and biochemical methods.

The appointment is a temporary full-time postdoc (AAP temporary appointment, 100%) for 3 years, with the possibility of a second appointment of up to 3 years after a favorable evaluation. The post is based at Ghent University, Belgium, and the earliest start date is 1 January 2027. Salary is according to AAP5, and university staff benefit from training opportunities, paid leave, bicycle commuting reimbursement, and ecocheques.

The successful candidate will devote at least 70% of their time to academic research, while also contributing to teaching in (Experimental) Marine Ecology at Bachelor’s and Master’s level. Duties include supervising and counseling Master’s students in exercises, placements, and dissertations, as well as supporting doctoral students.

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree by the start date, preferably in Biology, Marine Sciences, Biochemistry and Biotechnology, or Bioscience Engineering, or another relevant discipline accepted by the selection committee. The university asks for prior research experience in marine ecology, preferably with expertise in experimental ecology, stress responses of organisms, and/or biochemical approaches such as lipidomics. Experience with R and statistical analysis of ecological datasets and/or with laboratory and field experimentation is expected. For degrees obtained outside the European Union, a NARIC certificate of equivalence must be provided or proof that the application for it has been submitted.
