About this position

Wageningen University & Research is advertising a postdoctoral position in designing and testing biochars for pollution control in urban environments. The project focuses on translating laboratory-scale discoveries into real-world field applications, with a strong emphasis on urban environmental science, water purification, soil remediation, contaminant mitigation, and biochar production.

The role is embedded in the Environmental Technology division and the micropollutant and pathogen group at WUR. You will work with Dr. Gabriel Sigmund and Dr. Nora Sutton, and collaborate closely with the Municipality of Amsterdam and other European cities involved in a broader European project. The project aims to develop locally produced biochar from urban green waste into a market-ready, carbon-negative technology with environmental co-benefits.

Research tasks include optimizing biochar production from different biomass types and pyrolysis conditions, designing tailored biochars for specific applications such as road runoff treatment, and conducting batch and laboratory column experiments. You will also help inform and monitor field tests in Amsterdam, synthesize findings for scientific and practitioner audiences, supervise students, and contribute to teaching.

Eligibility highlights: a completed PhD in environmental engineering, environmental chemistry, environmental sciences, chemical engineering, or a related field; experience with biochar characterization and contaminant sorption/leaching experiments; ability to work across disciplines and with non-academic stakeholders; teaching and student supervision experience; and English proficiency at C1 level.

Funding and terms: this is a salaried postdoc role with a gross monthly salary of €3,546–€5,538 for a 38-hour week. The initial contract is for one year and may be extended for the project duration. Standard WUR employment benefits are included.

Location: Wageningen, Netherlands.
