About this position

Alexey Mikaberidze, Professor of Plant Diseases and Crop Protection at the University of Göttingen, is hiring a postdoc in mathematical modeling of fungal plant disease dynamics. The project sits at the intersection of mathematical biology, plant pathology, epidemiology, and crop protection, with a focus on foliar fungal diseases of wheat.

The successful candidate will develop deterministic and stochastic models (including ODEs, PDEs, and spore dispersal models) across scales from single leaves to field epidemics, and fit models to image-based phenotyping data. The research also includes ecological and evolutionary questions, such as how leaf-scale fitness traits scale up to drive epidemics and how pathogens adapt to resistant cultivars and fungicides.

This is a 100% E13 TV-L position for 2.5 years, with possible extension. The start date is 1 February 2027 or shortly after. The postdoc is expected to frame and lead an independent project within a supportive, interdisciplinary group combining experimental plant pathology, epidemiology, and mathematical modeling.

Eligibility highlights: PhD or near-PhD in theoretical/mathematical biology, applied mathematics, physics, or another quantitative field; alternatively, a PhD in biological or agricultural sciences with strong quantitative research experience. Strong dynamical-systems modeling and scientific programming skills are required, preferably in Python. Fluent English is required; German is a plus.

Application deadline: 11 September 2026. Details and application are available via the linked posting.
