About this position
KTH Royal Institute of Technology is advertising a postdoctoral position in Nuclear Fuel Materials within Nuclear Science and Engineering at the Department of Physics in Stockholm, Sweden. The project focuses on the study of fission product kinetics in advanced nuclear fuel, specifically uranium nitride, using ion implantation together with experimental and computational approaches.
The successful candidate will join the nuclear fuel materials team and contribute to research on fission product diffusion kinetics and the formation of the high burnup structure (HBS) in uranium nitride. The project is supported by the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority and carried out in collaboration with Westinghouse and Uppsala University. This makes the role especially relevant for researchers interested in nuclear materials, fuel performance, radiation effects, and coupled experimental-modelling studies.
The appointment is a temporary full-time postdoctoral position for up to two years. KTH describes the role as a time-limited qualified appointment focused mainly on research and intended as an early career step after the doctorate. The position is based in Stockholm and is associated with KTH’s wider mission in education, research, innovation, and sustainable development.
Applicants must hold a doctoral degree or equivalent foreign degree by the time the employment decision is made. A PhD in Nuclear Engineering, Materials Science, Engineering Mechanics, or a closely related area is preferred. Strong merit is given to candidates who recently earned their doctorate, have practical laboratory experience in sintering, powder metallurgy, and characterization techniques, and who are familiar with mesoscale modelling and multiphysics finite element modelling. Excellent English communication skills, teamwork, independence, and motivation for research are also emphasized. Teaching experience is considered an advantage, and KTH highlights the importance of diversity, equal opportunity, and gender equality.
To apply, candidates must use KTH’s recruitment system and provide a CV, copies of degrees and transcripts, a brief statement describing research interests and future goals (maximum two pages), and the contact details of 2-3 reference persons. The application deadline is 2026-10-01.
For questions, the posting lists contact emails for Faris Sweidan, Pär Olsson, and Jens H Bardarson. The job advert also notes that a security clearance may be required if the position is classified as security-sensitive.
