Cornell University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is advertising a Postdoctoral Associate in the Department of Animal Science based in New York City, New York, United States.
The position is in the Dillon Lab, which studies the role of animal-source foods in sustainable food systems. The successful candidate will work on a multi-disciplinary, international project examining how efficiency-based methane mitigation strategies affect smallholder dairy livelihoods, milk production efficiency, and potential environmental rebound effects. The research combines socioeconomic data analysis, livestock systems, production data, herd dynamics, and methane emissions to build and evaluate a dynamic simulation model of smallholder dairy systems in India.
Core responsibilities include integrating household-level socioeconomic datasets with production and emissions data, developing a system dynamics model, evaluating tradeoffs among production efficiency, methane emissions, and socioeconomic outcomes, and disseminating results through manuscripts, technical reports, policy briefs, and presentations. The role also includes project coordination and reporting.
Applicants should hold a PhD in Animal Science, Agricultural Economics, Sociology, Environmental Science, Global Development, or a closely related field. Strong experience with socioeconomic data collection or analysis, including household survey data, is required, along with evidence of scholarly productivity. Experience with smallholder livestock systems, systems thinking, system dynamics, agent-based modeling, econometrics, integrated assessment, animal nutrition, whole-farm models, or life cycle assessment is preferred. Experience in India or the Global South is also valued. System dynamics training may be provided for candidates with strong smallholder livestock expertise.
This is a postdoctoral opening, not a scholarship. The posting lists a hiring range of $63,480–$65,000.
