Umeå University, one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions, is offering a two-year postdoctoral position in data privacy and machine learning, funded by the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP). The position is based in the Department of Computing Science, which is known for its inclusive and dynamic research environment and strong international collaborations.
The successful candidate will join the Privacy-aware transparency decisions research group, led by Professor Vicenç Torra, focusing on developing privacy-aware machine learning models for complex and high-dimensional data, including temporal and synthetic data. Research topics include differential and integral privacy, k-anonymity, privacy in centralized and decentralized (federated learning) scenarios, and privacy-preserving machine learning at scale. The group is actively involved in national and international collaborations and edits a leading journal in data privacy.
Applicants must hold a PhD in Computer Science or a closely related field, with documented research experience in designing algorithms and methods for data privacy and machine learning. Publications in top venues such as NeurIPS, ICML, S&P, PETs, or ESORICS are highly valued. Excellent written and spoken English is required. The position offers a full-time contract, starting 1 April 2026 or as agreed, with a competitive monthly salary and comprehensive support for career development.
