About this position
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is hiring a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Advanced Machining and Machine Tool Research Group within the Manufacturing Science Division, Energy Science and Technology Directorate, at the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, United States.
The role focuses on advanced manufacturing, including machining processes, machine tool performance, process monitoring, machine tool metrology, manufacturing data analytics, process optimization, and digital manufacturing workflows. The successful candidate will support research and development projects that advance machining science, machine tool design and characterization, and manufacturing system integration.
Applicants should have a PhD completed within the past five years in mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, industrial engineering, materials science and engineering, mechatronics, electrical engineering, controls engineering, or a related field. Required experience includes machining science, machine tool dynamics, error compensation and modeling, CNC system design, machining process optimization, and hands-on work with CNC machine tools, controllers, G-code, CAM software, process planning, and fixture design.
Preferred experience includes machine tool metrology and performance evaluation, sensor and instrumentation integration, data analysis and automation using Python/MATLAB/C#/C++, and CAD/CAM/CAE tools such as Siemens NX, SolidWorks, Mastercam, Fusion, or VERICUT. Strong scholarly output and excellent communication skills are also valued.
