About this position

University of Oxford is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate for the ResistHFracture project in the Mechanics of Materials Laboratory. This is an experimental research role focused on developing the first generation of hydrogen-resistant alloys for future green hydrogen infrastructure.

The project combines materials science, mechanical engineering, and related physical sciences. Research activities include fracture and fatigue testing, advanced materials characterization, hydrogen–material interaction studies, and investigation of hydrogen embrittlement mechanisms. The successful candidate will work in a world-class research environment alongside leading researchers at Oxford.

Eligibility: applicants should have a PhD completed or near completion in engineering, materials science, physics, chemistry, or a related discipline. Experience in one or more of the following is desirable: mechanical testing, environmentally assisted fracture testing, temperature-programmed hydrogen desorption, materials characterization, hydrogen permeation, or coupled deformation-diffusion modelling.

Funding: the position is supported by an ERC Starting Grant and the UKRI Horizon Europe Guarantee. The post is a funded research appointment; no tuition or scholarship details are mentioned.

Deadline: 10 September 2026. Start date is listed as Autumn 2026 – Spring 2027.
