About this position

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is hiring a Postdoctoral Research Associate for the LEGEND program, focused on the search for neutrinoless double-beta decay of Ge-76. The position is based in the Neutrino Research Group within the Fundamental Nuclear & Particle Physics Section, Physics Division, Physical Sciences Directorate.

The successful candidate will contribute to the LEGEND-200 experiment, help lead R&D, design, and implementation for LEGEND-1000, and pursue research that expands the physics reach of low-background, rare-event searches. The role also includes opportunities to work on advanced analysis routines, detector instrumentation, simulations, low-background materials, scintillators, additive manufacturing, and AI/ML-enabled workflows.

Academic area keywords: experimental nuclear physics, particle physics, rare-event searches, low-background detectors, Ge detector technology, AI/ML, data analysis, simulations, materials development.

Eligibility: applicants must hold a Ph.D. in experimental nuclear physics, particle physics, or a closely related field completed within the last 5 years. Preferred experience includes detector hardware, data analysis, simulations, programming (C/C++, Julia, Python), underground labs, clean rooms, and collaborative international research.

Funding and appointment: this is a postdoctoral appointment of up to 24 months with possible extension, depending on performance and funding availability. ORNL notes competitive pay and benefits, plus relocation assistance and standard employee benefits.

Application: apply via the ORNL jobs portal. Also arrange for three letters of reference to be sent to postdocrecruitment@ornl.gov with the position title and number in the subject line.
