About this position

Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG) is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to lead and develop the research focus “Democratic Change and Knowledge”. The position sits at the intersection of democracy, knowledge, digitalisation, media, trust, disinformation, AI, and democratic publics.

The role focuses on the epistemic infrastructure of democracy—how institutions, procedures, authority, and trust make distinctions between true and false possible, and how these systems are changing under pressure. The successful candidate will conduct and publish high-impact research, help shape an interdisciplinary research agenda, build and supervise a team, and engage with academia, policy, business, and civil society.

Eligibility highlights: a completed PhD in political science, media studies, communication studies, law, sociology, philosophy, or a related discipline; demonstrated research experience in democracy and knowledge-related topics such as trust in science, hostility toward science, disinformation, information ecosystems, AI, or digital knowledge orders.

Funding and conditions: fixed-term until September 2029 with possible extension; salary aligned with TV-L 14 depending on qualifications and experience; administrative support for third-party funding, team building, knowledge transfer, and event organisation.

Application: review of applications begins on 24 August 2026. Apply through the provided link.
