About this position

Postdoctoral Researcher opportunity at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, in the Scholes Lab, Department of Civil Engineering.

The project focuses on environmental analytical chemistry and stormwater contaminants, especially trace organic contaminants in urban stormwater. The successful candidate will develop source-specific contaminant profiles and use advanced mass spectrometry techniques to support research on road runoff and related urban water quality issues.

Research activities include lab analysis, manuscript writing, report preparation, conference presentations, and mentoring junior lab members. The role also emphasizes collaboration with First Nations, streamkeepers, governments, and academic partners, so experience working with Indigenous and community groups is valued.

Required background: a PhD in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Chemistry, or a related area; expertise in LC-MS/MS analysis of organic contaminants; a strong publication record in high-quality journals; and excellent oral and written communication skills.

Preferred experience includes HRMS method development, suspect and nontarget screening, sample preparation such as solid phase extraction, experience with road runoff contaminants, and mentoring.

To apply, prepare a single PDF with a cover letter, CV, one publication, and three references, and email it to Dr. Rachel Scholes at rachel.scholes@ubc.ca.
