About this position

Ghent University is recruiting a Predoctoral Researcher in Groene Chemie en Technologie (Green Chemistry and Technology) within the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering in Ghent, Belgium. This is a PhD-level research opportunity embedded in European Horizon Europe projects GREENHOOD and MARVELA, with strong links to the BioRefine Cluster Europe and applied innovation in nutrient recycling.

The project addresses a timely and highly relevant challenge in European agriculture: how to improve nutrient use efficiency while reducing environmental impacts and supporting climate-smart farming. The research focuses on sustainable nutrient management, including livestock feeding strategies to reduce methane emissions, recovery of nutrients from livestock manure as RENURE fertilisers, precision fertilisation, and the development of robust monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) tools for non-CO2 greenhouse gas emissions and related air pollutants.

The successful candidate will spend at least 90% of the assignment on academic research in preparation of a doctoral dissertation. The work combines laboratory and field research and aims to contribute to practical, evidence-based mitigation strategies that support the transition toward a more resilient and climate-neutral agricultural sector. The position is positioned at the interface of environmental science, agricultural systems, manure management, and sustainable nutrient recycling.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree, preferably in applied biological sciences such as agriculture or environmental technology. Relevant experience in laboratory and/or field experimentation related to manure management and agricultural systems is expected. The role also requires solid English communication skills, basic data analysis ability using R, Python, MATLAB, or similar software, and basic GIS/digital mapping knowledge. Strong interpersonal skills are important because the researcher will interact with scientific, business, and farming communities.

The appointment is a contract of indefinite duration with a 4-year clause, with remuneration according to salary scale WM1 to WM4. The earliest start date is 1 October 2026. Ghent University highlights a supportive research environment, close supervision, opportunities for training and conferences, and the possibility of mobility within Europe and potentially China. In some cases, this may lead to a dual degree PhD arrangement.

The application deadline is 15 August 2026 at 23:59 Brussels time. Applications must be submitted online via the university’s e-recruitment system. Required documents include a CV with publications and study results, a motivation letter, a transcript of the required degree, and supporting documents such as a reference letter and examples of one’s most relevant publication for the job. For questions about the vacancy, contact Prof. E. Meers at Erik.Meers@UGent.be.
