Funded PhD Positions in Materials Science, 3D Printing, and Biomaterials at Heidelberg University

Heidelberg University is advertising two funded PhD positions in Germany with Prof. Eva Blasco’s group. The openings are research-focused and suitable for applicants interested in materials science , chemistry , biomaterials , biomedical research , and 3D printing . Position 1 is within the Collaborative Research Center on N-heteropolycycles as functional materials . The project focuses on functional materials, photopolymerizable compounds, fluorescence, and high-resolution 3D microstructures via two-photon laser printing. The linked project page describes work on N-heteropolycyclic derivatives, multicolor emissive structures, and chiroptical properties. Position 2 is in the new Cluster of Excellence SynthImmune and centers on innovative biomaterials at the interface of chemistry, materials science, and biomedical research. The environment is described as highly collaborative and interdisciplinary. The post says both positions are funded PhD opportunities. No stipend amount, tuition details, or waiver information are given. Applicants should prepare the requested documents carefully and apply by the deadline. Application deadline: 2026-06-15. How to apply: Position 1 requires sending a CV, motivation letter, and transcripts in a single PDF by email to eva.blasco@uni-heidelberg.de and christoph.spiegel@oci.uni-heidelberg.de. Position 2 requires submission through the online application portal.

PhD in Responsive Hydrogel Platforms for Biomedical Applications and Polymer Materials

Heidelberg University is advertising a PhD opportunity in responsive and tunable hydrogel platforms for next-generation biomedical applications. The project sits at the interface of polymer chemistry, materials science, biomedical engineering, and medical science, with a strong focus on the molecular design, synthesis, and characterization of functional polymer materials. The successful PhD candidate will develop innovative polymer systems with tailored chemical, mechanical, and biological properties, and investigate their use as advanced biomaterial platforms for 3D cell culture models and controlled modulation of disease-associated immune responses. The work will be carried out in collaboration with the group of Prof. Oliver Fackler at the Center for Integrative Infectious Disease Research (CIID), within the Excellence Cluster SynthImmune. This is a highly interdisciplinary environment where the student can gain expertise in advanced material synthesis, state-of-the-art characterization techniques, hydrogel design, and application-driven biomaterials research. The post highlights experience in polymer synthesis, modification, and characterization as important, while light-driven chemistry and biomaterials experience are advantageous. Strong English skills and motivation for collaborative research are required. Interested candidates should submit a single PDF containing a CV, cover letter, transcripts, and publication list. Applications should be sent to Prof. Dr. Eva Blasco and Dr. Samantha Catt. Review begins immediately.
