Part-time PhD opportunity in Control Systems and Robotics at The University of Manchester . This studentship is offered by the Control Systems and Robotics Group and is designed for candidates interested in research and teaching. The project is flexible: the exact research topic and supervisory team will be tailored to the successful applicant’s background and interests. Research areas include control theory and applications, robotics for extreme environments, autonomous systems, sensing, localisation, navigation, planning, optimisation, and decision-making. The work is connected to real-world challenges in nuclear, aerospace, automotive, energy, and pharmaceuticals, and is linked to Manchester’s wider robotics ecosystem, including the Centre for Robotics and AI. Funding : maintenance stipend of £27,107 per year (2025/26 rate). The studentship runs for 70 months and combines approximately 60% research with 40% teaching. Eligibility : applicants should have a strong background in control systems, robotics/autonomous systems, mechatronics, computer science, or applied mathematics. A first-class or strong 2:1 degree is typically expected, along with strong analytical skills and an interest in both research and teaching. Applicants must be eligible for Home fee status; international applicants may be considered if residency requirements for part-time study are met.
