PhD in Generative AI and Creativity in Software Development

This PhD project at the University of Southampton explores how generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot, can augment creativity in software development while considering potential downsides. Supervised by Dr Victoria Jackson, Prof Thanassis Tiropanis, and Dr Richard Gomer, the research sits at the intersection of human-centred AI and software engineering, aiming to deliver impactful, real-world outcomes. The project addresses underexplored questions about the influence of AI on developer creativity, including how generative AI can foster creative thinking strategies (like divergent or analogical reasoning), mitigate cognitive biases (such as anchoring and fixation), and support collaborative creativity in team-based development. It also examines developers' perceptions of using AI for creative tasks and its effects on self-efficacy, motivation, and job satisfaction. Combining insights from Software Engineering and Human-Computer Interaction, the research will use empirical studies and design interventions to understand and enhance creativity in AI-assisted workflows. The outcomes are expected to benefit both academia and industry, helping organizations cultivate creativity as a core competency in the age of AI. The project is ideal for candidates passionate about human-centered AI and the future of software engineering, with opportunities to engage with industry practitioners. Entry Requirements: Applicants must hold a UK 2:1 honours degree or its international equivalent. Required application materials include a research proposal, CV, two academic references, degree transcripts and certificates, and proof of English language proficiency if applicable. Funding: The University of Southampton offers a range of funding opportunities for both UK and international students. Competition-based Presidential Bursaries and studentships may cover UK-level tuition fees and a stipend for living costs for top-ranked applicants. Funding is awarded on a rolling basis, so early application is encouraged. How to Apply: Apply online by selecting the PhD Computer Science (7089) programme (Research) for 2026/27 in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences. Choose full-time or part-time, and include the supervisor's name in section 2 of the application. Submit all required documents as outlined above.
