About this position
The University of Antwerp is offering a full-time doctoral scholarship holder position in Electronics-ICT: Artificial Intelligence within the Department of Electronics and Information and Communication Technology, Faculty of Applied Engineering. This is a PhD position focused on developing intelligent control algorithms for inland waterway vessels using machine learning.
The research project aims to support optimal and efficient vessel control by balancing several objectives at once: reducing energy consumption, ensuring smooth operation without abrupt manoeuvres, complying with regulations, and arriving on time. The project also considers hybrid propulsion systems, including engines and batteries, as well as additional onboard energy consumers such as cargo climate control and hotel loads. The system is designed to learn from data and adapt to changing conditions so it can make balanced and sustainable decisions in real time.
The doctoral researcher will work toward the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis, publish scientific articles related to the project, and carry out a limited amount of teaching and/or research management support within the department. The position is located primarily at Campus Groenenborger in Antwerp.
Eligibility highlights include a master’s degree in Electronics-ICT, Computer Science, or a related engineering discipline (or completion by the time of appointment), excellent study results, and teaching and research qualities aligned with the University of Antwerp’s educational and research policies. The university emphasizes quality, integrity, creativity, cooperation, diversity, and equal opportunity.
The scholarship is offered for two years initially and can be renewed once for another two years after positive evaluation. The monthly amount is based on the standard doctoral scholarship rates, and additional benefits include ecocheques, an Internet-connectivity allowance, and either a bicycle allowance or full reimbursement of public transport commuting costs.
Applications must be submitted through the University of Antwerp’s online platform by 19 August 2026, 23:59 Brussels time. Applicants should include a motivation letter, academic CV, and a one-page A4 proposal describing how they would approach the project.
