About this position

The Mandela Scholarship Fund at Leiden University supports exchange study for students from four South African partner universities: Stellenbosch University, the University of Cape Town, the University of Pretoria, and the University of the Western Cape.

This is a scholarship/studentship for Bachelor and Master students who want to study at Leiden University for one or two semesters as part of an exchange programme. Eligible faculties span Archaeology, Humanities, Medicine/LUMC, Governance and Global Affairs, Law, Social and Behavioural Sciences, Science, ICLON, African Studies Centre, and the International Institute for Asian Studies.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must be enrolled at one of the four named South African universities, be pre-selected by their home university, and meet Leiden University’s admission requirements for exchange/study abroad students. The scholarship cannot be combined with an Erasmus+ ICM scholarship.

Funding: the award includes a monthly living allowance and Aon Student Insurance for the exchange period. Funding levels differ by home university: students from the University of Cape Town, University of Pretoria, and the University of the Western Cape receive €1,250 per month; Stellenbosch University students receive €625 per month.

Deadline: Leiden University deadline is 15 October for programmes starting in February, and 1 April for programmes starting in September. Applicants should also check the deadline with their South African home university.

How to apply: first submit the scholarship application to your home university in South Africa. Then submit the online admission application for an exchange/study abroad course at Leiden University. Selected candidates are notified after admission and receive further instructions.
