About this position
PhD opportunity at The University of Queensland in the School of Chemical Engineering for a project on engineering scalable single cell oil (SCO) production for the sustainable manufacturing of oleochemicals.
This project addresses an important challenge in the biomanufacturing of renewable oils: how to maximise lipid yield and process efficiency while keeping production scalable and industrially feasible. SCO technology uses oleaginous microorganisms to convert renewable and non-refined feedstocks into energy-dense triacylglycerols, creating an alternative route to conventional agricultural oils and supporting a more sustainable chemical industry.
The research will focus on advanced SCO production strategies that optimise carbon partitioning, process performance, and industrial feasibility. It sits at the intersection of chemical engineering, biological engineering, microbial physiology, and bioprocess engineering, with strong relevance to sustainable manufacturing and industrial biotechnology.
The project will be based at UQ’s St Lucia campus in the Andrew N. Liveris Building, which hosts state-of-the-art laboratories for microbial cultivation, biotechnology, and bioengineering. Students will have access to cutting-edge analytical and bioprocess engineering infrastructure within the building, as well as dedicated core facilities across the St Lucia campus.
The advert indicates a PhD scholarship and a full-time position. Applicants should hold a relevant approved degree and demonstrate research experience. UQ lists acceptable pathways including a research master’s degree, an honours degree at class IIA or above, or qualifying coursework and research experience. English language proficiency is required, with the vacancy specifying excellent English.
Applications are submitted by expression of interest (EOI) through the admissions portal. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed, and selected candidates will then proceed to a full application for eligibility approval by the UQ Admissions team.
Deadline: 2026-08-24.
