About this position

PhD Research Scholarship in Tourism at the University of Évora (CIDEHUS)

CIDEHUS – the Interdisciplinary Centre for History, Cultures and Societies at the University of Évora – is advertising 1 PhD Research Scholarship in Tourism under strategic project reference UID/00057/2025. The scholarship is linked to the PhD Programme in Tourism at the University of Évora and is framed within the research group G3 - Tourism and Populations.

The award is intended for a doctoral candidate who will develop a research work plan aligned with CIDEHUS.UÉ’s strategic project and the thematic scope of Tourism research. Applicants must prepare a structured proposal of up to 4,000 words using APA 7th edition, including a title, abstract, keywords, state of the art, detailed research design, objectives, methodology, expected scientific and practical contributions, and references. The notice emphasises the need to clearly justify the theoretical framework, empirical context, and methodological approach of the thesis project.

Eligibility highlights include holding a master’s degree (preferably in Tourism), not already holding a doctorate, and not having previously received an FCT-funded PhD scholarship or PhD-in-companies scholarship. Candidates must demonstrate Portuguese proficiency in speaking and writing, and English at B2 level or equivalent. They must also already be enrolled in the University of Évora PhD Programme in Tourism, or commit to enrolling by the time the contract is signed.

The scholarship is fully funded through national FCT funds (PIDDAC), with a monthly maintenance allowance of €1,359.64. Voluntary Social Security may also be reimbursed if applicable. Tuition/registration/enrolment fees are handled through the University of Évora and the FCT funding process. The fellowship is initially awarded for 12 months, renewable up to 36 months or until the project budget ends, subject to performance and regulatory conditions.

The work will be carried out in person at the University of Évora, namely at CES and/or Palácio do Vimioso (CIDEHUS), Évora, Portugal. The evaluation combines the candidate’s academic background and CV, the merit of the proposed research work plan, and an interview. Stronger consideration is given to relevant publications, project participation, and other academic experience in Tourism or related areas.

Application period: 5 August 2026 to 4 September 2026 at 23:59 (Europe/Lisbon). Applications must be submitted by email to cidehus@uevora.pt with the specified subject line and as separate PDF files. Required documents include the application letter, motivation letter, identification/NIF, CV with evidence, degree certificates (and recognition/conversion for foreign degrees), the research work plan, proof of enrolment or a declaration of honour, and any other supporting documents.

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
