ARC Training Centre for Battery Recycling PhD Scholarship

PhD scholarship opportunity in battery recycling at the ARC Training Centre for Battery Recycling, based at Adelaide University in Australia.

The project is supervised by Dr Gemeng Liang and A/Prof Jianfeng Mao and focuses on converting recycled Li, Co, Ni, and Mn salts recovered from the DES 2.0 process into high-Ni NCM cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries. It also includes direct recycling of cathode materials from black mass to improve the value and sustainability of recycled battery materials.

Research themes include advanced battery recycling technologies, synchrotron/neutron-based characterisation, direct recycling, purification/refinement of recovered salts, and synthesis of battery-grade precursors and cathode materials. The Centre emphasizes industry engagement, translation, commercialisation, and cross-sector training.

Eligible applicants are encouraged from backgrounds in chemical engineering, materials science, chemistry, metallurgy, or related fields. The post is aimed at highly motivated PhD candidates interested in sustainable energy solutions and future battery technologies.
