PhD Scholarship: Continuous Smart Sensing for Coastal Cliff Instability

This fully funded PhD project is based in the School of Computer Science, University of Auckland, and is associated with the Dodd-Walls Centre for Photonic and Quantum Technologies. The research focuses on coastal cliff instability, environmental sensing, Internet of Things, computer science, and electrical engineering, with an emphasis on developing continuous sensing methods to detect early warning signs of cliff failure and understand erosion as a dynamic process.

The project explores three connected stages: detecting early weakening of rock blocks, measuring changes in cliff condition over time, and recording debris movement after collapse. The work involves designing sensing systems, testing them in realistic field conditions, and analysing the resulting data. Relevant technical areas include PCB design, embedded devices, electronics prototyping, coding, and field data analysis under uncertainty.

The scholarship is contestable and fully funded for three years. The successful applicant will receive a stipend of NZ$34,569 per annum, full tuition fee coverage, and additional support for research activities such as conference travel and collaborator visits.

Applications are welcome from both domestic and international students. The ideal candidate has a strong background in computer science, electrical engineering, physics, or a closely related field, and should be motivated to work at the intersection of sensing hardware and environmental data analysis. Prior expertise in coastal cliffs is not required.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
