PhD Scholarships 2027 are available at Stellenbosch University in partnership with the Gerda Henkel Foundation through the LISA MASKELL / PANGeA Doctoral Scholarships programme.

The opportunity is based in Stellenbosch, South Africa, and is a full-time PhD starting in February 2027. The faculty is Arts and Social Sciences, with a strong focus on Historical Humanities.

Priority research areas include History, Historical Islamic Studies, Art History, History of Law, Prehistory and Early History, and History of Science. The call also welcomes related work in cultural studies, political science, and other social sciences with a historical context, such as forced migration and democracy.

Funding is substantial: R662,025.00 over 3 years, including research support, fieldwork, and conference costs.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must be from African countries, with priority for those from PANGeA partner institutions. Applicants should have at least 70% in the final year of the previous degree, be 40 years old or younger at application, and hold an MA degree. A writing sample is required.
