About this position

[Fully funded studentship including a minimum tax-free stipend for home fee-eligible students; international students may apply but funding is restricted and only exceptional candidates will be considered.]

The Centre for Additive Manufacturing (CfAM) in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Nottingham is inviting applications for a fully funded PhD studentship in advanced multi-metal additive manufacturing. This project sits at the intersection of materials science, engineering design, and high-temperature process development, with strong relevance to future energy systems, electronics, and advanced manufacturing technologies.

The research focuses on Molten Metal Jetting (MMJ), an emerging metal 3D printing method that enables precise fabrication of multi-material metallic structures with reduced waste and minimal post-processing. CfAM has developed a unique multi-material MMJ platform capable of printing two metals within a single build at microscopic resolution. The PhD will extend this capability to high-melting-point metals and alloys for demanding engineering applications.

The successful candidate will contribute to the design, modelling, and development of a high-temperature crucible and droplet ejection system that can operate reliably under severe thermal and chemical conditions. The project combines computational modelling, system design, experimental testing, and process optimisation. It will also include fabrication and characterisation of 3D multi-material metal structures, with particular emphasis on interactions between dissimilar materials at the microscale.

Students will work within a multidisciplinary team of academics, postdoctoral researchers, and technical staff using the world-leading facilities at CfAM. The project is industrially relevant and scientifically ambitious, offering opportunities to engage with industrial partners, build transferable research skills, and present results at national and international conferences.

Funding information in the advert states that fully funded studentships with a minimum tax-free stipend are available for home fee-eligible students. International applicants are welcome to apply, but funding restrictions mean that only exceptional candidates, for example those with first-author publications, can be considered.

Entry requirements include a first or upper second-class academic qualification in engineering, physical sciences, or a related discipline. Experience with coding such as MATLAB or LabVIEW is beneficial, and familiarity with multiphysics simulation tools is desirable. Applicants should also demonstrate creative thinking, independence, and ideally some industry experience.

To apply, email a covering letter, CV, and academic transcripts to Dr Negar Gilani at negar.gilani@nottingham.ac.uk. Applications without academic transcripts will not be considered. The advert indicates that applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until a suitable candidate is appointed, so early submission is encouraged.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
