About this position
Aarhus University’s Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering is advertising two fully funded PhD positions in geotechnical engineering, civil engineering, and structural engineering, focused on climate-driven geohazards in coastal and urban areas.
The research sits within the long-term Villum Foundation programme Civil Engineering and the Green Transition in the Built Environment (CEBE) and is part of a multidisciplinary team studying how climate change amplifies hazards such as coastal erosion, rainfall-induced landslides, wetting- and drying-related ground movements, and risks to near-shore infrastructure and urban environments.
PhD project 1: multi-physics modelling of wetting–drying induced ground movement, landslides, and coastal erosion.
PhD project 2: micro-to-macro behaviour and constitutive modelling of fissured high-plasticity stiff clays for landslides and climate-resilient infrastructure.
Applicants should have a BSc in civil engineering or a closely related discipline, an MSc with specialisation in geotechnical engineering, strong English communication skills, experience with advanced laboratory testing of geomaterials and constitutive modelling, and programming skills such as Python or MATLAB. For the second project, a short research proposal is required.
The positions are based at Aarhus University in Aarhus, Denmark. The deadline for both positions is 20 August 2026 at 23:59 CEST. One project link is provided via the post, and the other via the linked application page.
