About this position
NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) is advertising a PhD Candidate position in blast wave propagation in soil and rock, and structure interaction at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in Trondheim, Norway.
The project sits at the intersection of civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, computational mechanics, and soil-structure interaction. The successful candidate will study how blast and impact loading affect civil infrastructure, including buildings and underground facilities, using advanced finite element simulations, blast loading models, and experimental testing of geomaterials at high strain rates.
Research themes include wave propagation in soil and porous media, nonlinear finite element analysis, elasto-plastic response, blast/impact/shock loading, and the protective capacity of existing infrastructure under modern warfare scenarios. The work is embedded in an interdisciplinary environment with strong computational mechanics and geotechnical/rock mechanics groups.
Eligibility highlights: applicants need a relevant Master's degree in Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or equivalent; strong background in mathematics, dynamics, and wave propagation; and a grade average of B or better on NTNU's scale (or equivalent). Master students may apply if they complete and document the degree before starting, and no later than 2026-11-30. English fluency is required, and applicants with MSc degrees from outside Europe are expected to document language proficiency unless waived in extraordinary circumstances.
Funding and conditions: this is a salaried PhD employment, normally NOK 550,800 gross per year depending on qualifications and seniority, with a 3-year employment period. The position requires admission to NTNU's PhD programme in engineering within three months of starting.
How to apply: submit the application electronically via Jobbnorge.no. Include transcripts and diplomas, CV, a copy or draft of your Master's thesis, a project outline (max 1500 words/4 pages), a motivation letter (max 400 words/1 page), relevant publications or certificates, and contact details for three referees. If your education was completed abroad, attach documentation of scope and quality, plus any diploma supplement or HK-dir statement.
Deadline: 2026-08-15.
