About this position
NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) is advertising a PhD Candidate in Computational Mechanics of Protective Structures under Blast and Impact Loading at the Department of Structural Engineering in Trondheim, Norway.
The project sits in computational mechanics, civil engineering, structural engineering, and mechanical engineering, with a strong focus on finite element analysis, fluid-structure interaction, blast loading, impact loading, structural response, failure mechanisms, and collapse resistance of civil infrastructure and protective structures. The research will study whether existing buildings, underground facilities, and other critical infrastructure can provide adequate protection against modern warfare threats, including missile and drone attacks, and may use selected existing structures as case studies.
The position is part of an interdisciplinary environment with the SIMLab research group and involves high-quality research, publication in international journals and conferences, and participation in an organized doctoral programme.
Eligibility highlights: a relevant Master's degree in Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computational Mechanics, or equivalent; strong academic performance (normally B or better on NTNU's scale); and admission to the PhD programme in engineering. Master students may apply if they complete the degree before starting and no later than 2026-11-30. Preferred experience includes finite element methods, plasticity and failure modeling, structural dynamics, design guidelines for structural engineering, blast/impact/shock loading, and programming/scientific computing (Python, Matlab, C++ or similar).
Funding: salaried PhD position at NTNU, normally NOK 550,800 per year gross, for 3 years.
Application deadline: 2026-08-15. Apply through Jobbnorge and submit transcripts, diplomas, CV, thesis, research statement, motivation letter, and referee contacts.
